Most Nigerian freelancers start working without a contract because it feels awkward to ask for one. Then a client disputes the scope, refuses to pay, or disappears — and there's nothing in writing to fall back on.

A freelance contract doesn't have to be long or complicated. It just needs to cover the right things.

What Every Nigerian Freelance Contract Must Include

    1. Names and contact details

Full legal names of both parties, email addresses, and phone numbers. For companies, include the registered business name.

    2. Scope of work

Describe exactly what you will deliver. Be specific. "Logo design" is vague. "3 logo concepts, 2 rounds of revisions, final files in PNG, SVG, and PDF" is a scope.

    3. Timeline

When will you deliver each milestone? What happens if the client delays feedback?

    4. Payment terms

  • Total amount
  • Payment schedule (e.g., 50% upfront, 50% on delivery)
  • Due dates
  • Late payment fees (e.g., 5% per week after due date)
  • Accepted payment methods

  • 5. Revision policy

How many rounds of revisions are included? What is the cost of additional revisions?

    6. Ownership and rights

Who owns the work after payment? Typically, the client owns the final work but you retain the right to show it in your portfolio.

    7. Confidentiality

If you'll have access to sensitive business information, include an NDA clause.

    8. Termination clause

What happens if either party wants to cancel? Who keeps what money?

    9. Dispute resolution

For Nigerian freelancers, specify that disputes will be resolved under Nigerian law.
